About Me and My Application

Why I would like to study at Manchester School of Architecture

The key intrigue about MSA is the unique collaboration space that there is on offer, with the combination of both MMU and UoM facilities. This along with the Manchester Student Society of Architecture, I will be able to fully delve into my degree and get the chance to widen my knowledge and collaborate with those who are equally as passionate. Not only this, but the rich architectural landscape that Manchester itself has to offer would really fuel inspiration for my studies and allow for flexibility in my creativity, with the juxtaposition between neoclassical and neo-gothic forms.

My own review of a recent exhibition/building

In 2017, I visited the MoMA in New York to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s 150th anniversary exhibition. Being such a prolific and iconic architect, seeing his works in real life provoked such a genuine feeling of excitement for me.  His organic style of work was as impressive in person; the intertwining of Japanese architecture, the use of pastel tones and the prominent environmental purity to create works like the 'Usonian' house are what transcended his exhibition above the rest.

My favourite architect

Raffeallo Rosselli's work has become a recent inspiration for me due to her use of recycled and sustainable materials in construction, allowing the stigma surrounding neglected  materials to be reduced. Ultimately, she sees the worth in waste which in itself is a statement considering that a large proportion of a buildings energy footprint is valued within the materials themselves.

A work of architecture I would like to experience

The Guggenheim Bilbao has always been a building that I would like to experience in person due to its modernity yet its striking history. The folds of stone, glass and titanium allow the structure to really express itself in the urban context and juxtaposes the previous stunted setting of Bilbao. Works like this have always inspired me as they ultimately show the regeneration that architecture brings and embody progression.

By doing so, there is an almost political message revolving around the idea that certain underprivileged spaces are often lost when it comes to restoration in architecture.
